Design of the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse

While most lighthouses have a single tower, the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse has three : a central tower with two smaller towers at either side.

Col Michell, the Surveyor-General, decided to build the lighthouse in the style of the Pharos of Alexandria.

Similarities between the two:
The placing of the towers is identical but the shape of the smaller towers differ;
Both lighthouses have a broad base;
Cornices are found in both

Other Egyptian architectural characteristics:
The pylon shape of the mock windows,
The fake entrance resembles the Temple of Isis,
Similar frieze designs can be seen at temples and tombs in Egypt,
Its massiveness and the strong horizontal lines.

Local limestone was used as the building material. This was quarried 100 meters from the lighthouse. Imported Burmese teak was used for the windows, doors, stairs and floors.
